For Terms That Didn't Exist Yet.Category-Creation SEO

A vertical technology platform building a new product category needed organic demand creation and capture for queries that hadn't existed eighteen months earlier, and would shape who owned the category once they did.

01 / Challenge

Category-creation marketing is a different problem from category-capture marketing. The platform was building a new product category, early enough that target buyers were searching for problem descriptions, not solution names. Whoever owned the search results when the category formalized would own the category. The window was short.

02 / Approach

We built the category definition pages: 12 cornerstone terms that would become the SEO category boundary as the market matured. Each page anchored a topical cluster of supporting content, structured to rank for both the eventual category term and the problem descriptions buyers were searching for in the meantime. Internal linking and schema oriented toward what the search results would eventually look like, not what they looked like at engagement start.

03 / Results

Nine months in, the platform owned the first page for all 12 cornerstone category terms. As search volume on those terms grew (it has), the platform captured it by default. Competitors who waited are now playing catch-up against an established topical authority.

  • 1st-page ranking for 12 cornerstone category terms
  • Topical authority established before category formalized
  • 38K+ monthly searches now flowing through owned pages
  • Three direct competitors still below page 1 on core terms
  • Category-position moat built ahead of market maturation
We were creating the category. They made sure we'd own it when the rest of the market caught up.
